Editorial Policy

HorrorExchange.com is run by two horror fans, Josh and Yvonne. This page spells out the rules we hold ourselves to, so you know what you're reading when you read a review here. For how the scoring works, see How We Review & Score.

Independence

Our reviews are our own opinions. We don't take payment for reviews, and we don't publish sponsored content. No publisher, studio, developer or author can buy a review, a score or a mention.

How we choose titles

We review what we're genuinely curious about. That includes new releases and older titles, across movies, books and games. We pick based on our own interest, and never because anyone offered us anything for doing so.

We watch, read or play every title in full before reviewing it. Then we talk it through together, and the reviewer writes it up and scores it. Our reviews go up whether the title is a favorite or a disappointment, and we'd rather tell you the truth than protect a score.

We also welcome suggestions and recommendations! If you have a title you think we should check out, send it through our contact page.

Spoilers

We try to keep our reviews spoiler-free. We describe the premise and how the experience feels, and we never give away endings, twists, deaths or reveals.

Scoring consistency

Every review scores the same set of facets for its medium: 13 for movies, 8 for books and 9 for games. Each facet is scored from 1 to 5 in half-point steps, using the same scale every time, and every score comes with a short comment explaining it. The overall rating runs from 0 to 5 in half-point steps and starts from the facet average, rounded up to the nearest half point.

We keep the scale the same so that a 4 on one review means the same thing as a 4 on another. The full breakdown is in How We Review & Score, with a guide to the facets for movies, books and games.

Corrections and updates

We get things wrong sometimes. A cast name gets mixed up, a release year is off, or a detail we described doesn't match what's on screen or on the page.

When we correct a mistake, we fix it in the review. Reviews can also be updated when there's a good reason. When a review has been changed, the "updated" date appears on the review so you can see it.

If you spot an error, please tell us through our contact page. Tell us which review it's in and what looks wrong, and we'll take a look.

Affiliate links and advertising

Some pages may contain affiliate links. These are clearly labeled. If you buy something through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, and we appreciate your support! The site may also show advertising. That's part of how we cover the costs of running it.

Neither affiliate links nor advertising ever affects a score or what we choose to cover. A title doesn't get a better review because there's a link to buy it, and an advertiser can't change a word.

Suggest a title

Got something you think we should watch, read or play? We'd like to hear about it. Send your suggestion through our contact page. We can't promise to review everything we're sent, but we're always curious what other horror fans are into.
