Horror Movies
Horror movies can mean a lot of different things, from slow, creeping dread to bloody action romps. When we watch one, we're looking for how it makes us feel and whether it commits to what it's trying to be. Every movie review here scores 13 facets, so you can see exactly what you're getting.
A few facets do the most work for movies. Atmosphere tells you how well the mood pulls you in. Genuine Fear/Suspense tells you whether it's actually scary or just fun. Jump Scares and Violence and Gore let you dodge, or seek out, the stuff you care about. Music/Soundtrack/Audio covers sound design too, which can make or break a scare. The full list is in our movie facet guide.

Standout picks
- Buddy (4.5): a 1990s kids' show mascot gone sinister, and a film that plays the whole bizarre premise completely straight.
- The Long Walk (4.5): sustained dread and strong performances, and it feels claustrophobic even though it takes place out in the open.
- Undertone (4.0): an experience driven almost entirely by sound design, best played loud or with headphones.
Not sure where to start? Open any review and look at the facet scores in the Scoring Details section. In a few seconds, you'll know whether it's the kind of scary you're in the mood for tonight.
